Dean Of Nursing and Midwifery
Welcome to the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at Ekwendeni College of Health Sciences. This is the first and oldest faculty, which has existed since the college’s opening in 1946. Since its inception, the faculty has evolved from training class II midwives who were trained in the local Tumbuka language to the current crop of well-prepared nursing and midwifery graduates.
Our faculty is committed to preparing highly competent graduates through appropriate student-centred and evidence-based education, enabling them to work in diverse healthcare settings across Malawi and beyond. Accredited by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi, the faculty offers programmes that meet national and international nursing standards.

The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery exists to train highly skilled, compassionate and competent Nursing and Midwifery professionals. We strive to utilise innovative, evidence-based learning methods with hands-on clinical practice to foster a deep understanding of patient care, maternal health, and community well-being.
Programs under the Faculty
CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNITY MIDWIFERY ASSISTANT (CMA)
- This is a generic face-to-face programme that runs for 18 months, designed to equip the midwifery assistant with the capacity to practise competently and serve the community by providing promotive and preventive midwifery care utilising the midwifery management process and the primary health care approach.
Program Entry Requirements
All prospective candidates for this programme must:
- Be aged between 20 and 40 years by the date of application.
- Possess a full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with two credit passes in English and Biology and a pass in Physical Science or Physics or Chemistry or Mathematics.

Career Prospects
After completion of the training, graduates shall practise as Community Midwifery Assistants in the community, where they will identify, counsel and refer all pregnant mothers to comprehensive midwifery services at the health centre level.
UNIVERSITY CERTIFICATE IN MIDWIFERY (UCM)
The University Certificate in Midwifery is a one-year, face-to-face programme that is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes in caring for mothers, neonates, families and communities utilising the Midwifery Management Process. It is offered to Registered Nurses (RNs) who have a BSc in Nursing and a University Diploma in Nursing and who plan to study midwifery.
The programme focuses on learners’ development of essential competencies for maternal, neonatal and community care and service delivery, including lifesaving skills. The goal of the programme is to produce competent and compassionate graduates who will respond to the needs and emerging issues in Malawi while contributing quality midwifery care to mothers, neonates, families and communities.
The program utilises a competency-based and learner-centred approach to imparting knowledge and skills to learners
Entry Requirements
- A full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six credits, including the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Biology and Physical Science or Physics or Chemistry, plus any other two subjects.
- A University Diploma in Nursing or a Degree in General Nursing
- Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.
Courses offered
Anatomy and Physiology of Obstetrics, Midwifery Science, Neonatal Science and Community Midwifery, including all clinical courses.
DIPLOMA IN NURSING AND MIDWIFERY TECHNICIAN (NMT)
This is a generic face-to-face programme that runs for 3 years (36 months), designed to equip graduates with knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes to provide high-quality nursing and midwifery care to individuals, families and communities.
What students learn
Support courses: Christian Ethics, Anatomy and Physiology, Communication in Nursing, Pharmacology and Entrepreneurship.
Core courses: Fundamentals of Nursing, Ethics, Professionalism and Management, Medical Nursing, Surgical Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Community Health, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Midwifery Science, Neonatal Science and Community Midwifery.
After completion of the program, graduates practice as Nursing and Midwifery Technicians in clinics, general inpatient wards, maternity wings and community settings
Entry Requirements
All prospective candidates must:
- Be aged between 16 and 45 years by the date of application.
- Possess a full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with four credits in English, Biology and Physical Science or Physics or Chemistry plus one of the following science subjects: Mathematics, Agriculture, Home Economics, General Science or Geography
NOTE: If Mathematics is not a credit, it should at least be a strong pass of seven points (7).
