Admission Requirements
The Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi (NMCM), the Medical Council of Malawi (MCM), Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board (PMPB), the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) and other stakeholders in the health care delivery system have outlined the entry requirements for admission into various programmes that are offered at Ekwendeni College of Health Sciences as outlined in below;
A. FACULTY OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY
1. Certificate in Community Midwifery Assistant (CMA) ( 18 MONTHS )
- This is a generic face-to-face programme that runs for 18 months, designed to equip the midwifery assistant with the capacity to practice competently and serve the community by providing pro-motive and preventive midwifery care utilizing the midwifery management process and the primary health care approach.
Program Entry Requirements
All prospective candidates for this programme must:
- Be aged between 20 and 40 years by the date of application.
- Possess a full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with two credit passes in English and Biology and a pass in Physical Science or Physics or Chemistry or Mathematics.
2. Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery Technician (NMT) ( 3 YEARS )
This is a generic face-to-face programme that runs for 3 years (36 months), designed to equip graduates with knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes to provide high-quality nursing and midwifery care to individuals, families and communities.
Entry Requirements
All prospective candidates must:
- Be aged between 16 and 45 years by the date of application.
- Possess a full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with four credits in English, Biology and Physical Science or Physics or Chemistry plus one of the following science subjects: Mathematics, Agriculture, Home Economics, General Science or Geography
NOTE: If Mathematics is not a credit, it should at least be a strong pass of seven points (7).
3. University Certificate in Midwifery (UCM) (1 YEAR)
The University Certificate in Midwifery is a one-year, face-to-face programme that is designed to enable learners to acquire knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes in caring for mothers, neonates, families and communities utilising the Midwifery Management Process. It is offered to Registered Nurses (RNs) who have a BSc in Nursing and a University Diploma in Nursing and who plan to study midwifery.
The programme focuses on learners’ development of essential competencies for maternal, neonatal and community care and service delivery, including lifesaving skills. The goal of the programme is to produce competent and compassionate graduates who will respond to the needs and emerging issues in Malawi while contributing quality midwifery care to mothers, neonates, families and communities.
The program utilizes a competency-based and learner-centered approach to imparting knowledge and skills to learners
Entry Requirements
- A full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six credits, including the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Biology and Physical Science or Physics or Chemistry, plus any other two subjects.
- A University Diploma in Nursing or a Degree in General Nursing
Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi.
B. FACULTY OF CLINICAL SCIENCES
1. Diploma in Clinical Medicine (DCM) ( 3 YEARS )
Entry Requirements
All prospective candidates for this program must:
- Be aged between 17 and 45 years by the date of application.
- Possess a full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six (6) credits in English, Mathematics, Biology and Physical Science/General Science/Physics and Chemistry plus any other two subjects.
2. Certificate in Pharmacy ( 2 years )
Entry Requirements
All prospective candidates for this program must:
- Be aged between 16 and 45 years by the date of application.
- Possess a full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six (6) credit passes including English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry plus any other two subjects.
3. Diploma in Pharmacy ( 3 Years )
Entry Requirements
All prospective candidates for this program must:
- Be aged between 16 and 45 years by the date of application
- Possess a full Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with six (6) credit passes including English, Mathematics, Biology and Physical Science/General Science plus any other two subjects.
NOTE: Candidates without Physical Science on their MSCE should have at least a credit pass in Chemistry.
Recruitment of Student at the College
- All short listed applicants will be invited for entrance examinations. The purpose of these examinations will be to establish the applicants’ educational standard, personal suitability for the course chosen and capacity to benefit from the course.
- Interviews are mainly in form of a written aptitude test and candidates proceed to oral interviews only if they pass written interviews except in e-Learning where only oral interviews are administered.
- Office of the College Principal shall communicate to the successful candidates in writing, through the press or through phone calls.
Conditions of Admission to the College
- Acceptance of an applicant by the College shall be on the understanding that the applicant undertakes to abide by and to the observance of the policies and regulations of the College
- A student will not be accepted for admission if he/she comes later than two (2) weeks after the commencement of the term/semester. A prior written arrangement is therefore required to reserve an offer in case of inability to pursue the course during that academic year.
- Arrangements should be done with the office of Deans of Faculty through the office of the Dean of Students prior to student’s withdrawal.
- Re-admission into the College is done to a Student who might have withdrawn from the College on either Medical or Maternity grounds or otherwise as it may be determined by the College Management.
Registration
- Students are expected to register within the first 2 weeks (10 working days) of a term or a semester.
- Any student who fails to register within the stipulated period shall forfeit his/her place unless a formal application to the college to defer his/her place is made within the period of registration
- The College is operating on a semester system. There are two semesters in an academic year for all programmes.
- An orientation programme will take place in the first week of the semester. It is obligatory that all new students attend the orientation programme
- All new students admitted into the college shall be registered subject to submission of satisfactory original copies of their academic certificates and/or transcripts. The students should also meet any special academic requirements to the faculty for admission.
- A student shall be registered only if he/she meets all financial obligations as required by the college
- All continuing students shall register on the first day of each semester.
